The process of punching sheet metal goes as follows:

The piece of sheet metal whether it be steel or aluminum is placed between the punch and a die.
The punch moves downward into the die, causing the sheet metal beneath the tool head to become detached from the surrounding material.
Cut metal slugs are collected by a conveyor leading to a hopper to be recycled.
The process is repeated using different tools until desired flat shape comes to fruition.
